The American Transportation Department's 'Advisory Committee for Aviation Consumer Protection stated that if safe and secure, airlines should have the power to let passengers make mobile phone calls whilst on a flight.
This proposal was widely criticised back in 2013 when the topic of in-flight calls originally surfaced, with travelers and flight attendants complaining at the potential unending chatter that could follow any changes in regulations.
The American panel that could make the decision is made up of airline representatives and consumers, so both sides of the argument are currently being considered. The Transportation Department could back any proposed changes to give consumers more flexibility, with business travelers benefitting from the ability to stay in contact with the ground even on long-haul flights – something which is currently outlawed.
The obvious issue with making an in-flight call is the potential for interference with the aircraft's onboard instruments and this could cause disruption to airline communications. However, this intereference is currently being investigated and if found to be negligible, a ban on calls could be lifted sooner rather than later.
A spokesman for American Airlines Group said "We'll keep the wishes of our customers in mind if the rules governing mobile phone use shift from the government to individual airlines."
