Britons love their smartphones and ‘selfies’

Ofcom has confirmed that 33% of Britons reached for their smartphone in 2014, compared to just 30% who grabbed their laptop. This has been hailed by the communications watchdog as a 'landmark moment' in technological history.

The study conducted earlier this year reveals that the average UK adult spent just under two hours a day on the internet, mostly on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. By the end of last year, 23.6 million people were connecting to the internet via 4G – with more than half of these using it to shop online.

Thanks to heavy investment by communications companies, over 90% of UK homes now have access to a 4G connection, with this figure set to rise to 98% by the end of 2017.

While tablet use was up by 10% on the previous year, the vast majority of households that own one are not using it as a mobile device according to Ofcom.

Perhaps the most shocking statistic to come out of this study was the 1.2 billion 'selfies' that were taken on smartphones last year – one in ten UK adults admitted to taking at least one selfie a week in 2014. It is believed that this photographic craze sweeping the nation has contributed to the significant increase in smartphone use over the last 12 months.
