The Stable Family Home Trust (SFHT) does excellent work to support and empower people with learning disabilities living in Dorset and Hampshire, and offer a range of services, including domiciliary care and supported living. We are proud to have raised £675 in total for this amazing charity – and had a fantastic time doing so.
The Poole Park event was organised by Dragon Boat Events, who organise dragon boat races up and down the country. It was a temperamental day, but thankfully the blustery conditions made little difference out on the sheltered lake – though it did make it much harder to lay our picnic rug!
After a safety brief, our combined team of 16, christened Wing & A Prayer, were ready to hit the water! We took part in 3 races over the course of the morning and afternoon, with the goal of getting a quick enough finishing time to qualify for the final race.
Paddling as a team took some getting used to, and whilst we won our first race, we were also pretty low down in the results table. We did manage to redeem ourselves in race 2, with a more synchronised plan of attack helping us shave 3.5 seconds off our initial time.
By race 3, we were pumped up and fully in the competitive spirit. However, this was ultimately to our detriment, as we got a little bit over excited and technique went totally out the window. Suffice to say, we didn’t manage to make the final, but we had an excellent time and walked away feeling like winners anyway!
