The last of the major providers to do so, O2 have chosen to launch its 5G network in Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London, Slough and Leeds and will expand this to cover a total of 50 cities and towns by 2020. The mobile giants are making it a priority to provide 5G at sites where high network use is affecting the quality of its service, such as train stations and entertainment venues, with the promise of providing faster downloads, buffer-free streaming and more reliable connections.
Already the last to join the 5G party, O2 will also be the only network to use equipment from suppliers other than the Chinese owned Huawei. Instead, it has chosen to stay with Ericsson and Nokia’s products who previously helped them roll out their 4G network. This announcement coincides with the delay in the government’s decision as to whether or not we should allow Huawei products in the UK’s rollout of 5G following their recent security breach scandal.
What are the benefits of the 5G mobile network?
5G is the fifth generation of mobile networks and differs from its predecessors because it’s been built with more devices in mind than just mobile. As the next big step in mobile network evolution, 5G promises a whole bundle of benefits for users and businesses alike, including:
- Much faster speeds – some have predicted you’ll be able to download a full HD film in 10 seconds or less.
- Increased capacity – this means networks will be able to cope better with peak demand and high-profile apps.
- It is super reliable – particularly good news for businesses, 5G promises to be ‘ultra-reliable’ so no more calls cutting out in the middle of important conversations.
- Extends battery life – perhaps somewhat contradictory considering how much more we will probably be using our mobiles, but 5G is set to actually increase battery life up to 10 times!
