The biggest benefit of a smartphone is also one of their downfalls, they have everything you could possibly need from a computer but in a drastically smaller device. This has allowed people to be constantly on the go; replying to emails, doing an online shop, calling friends, and Facetiming family can all be done anywhere in the world at any time. Although a fantastic invention, for some people a smartphone can be a distraction and that’s where Apple’s new wellbeing tools hopefully will help.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice-president of Software Engineering comments, “Some apps send us flurries of notifications trying to draw us in for fear of missing out. For some of us, it’s become such a habit we don’t even recognise just how distracted we’ve become.” It’s this distraction that has made it not uncommon to notice people glued to their phones when travelling, going out for dinner, or walking down the street. The new Screen Time app will be available in the new iOS 12 update, that will hopefully be released this June or September. The app will offer a dashboard highlighting how much time users spend on particular applications, to show how much time they’re spending on social media.
The focus on wellbeing has come after scrutiny from the public towards technology companies such as Facebook, Google, Twitter and Apple. Many companies encourage their users to keep visiting or spending more time on their app, website or device by allowing multiple notifications or infinite scrolling. The new Screen Time app sounds like it’s going to revolutionise how iPhone owners use their phones, but what do you think, will it work?
