Earlier this year, EE launched the Rook – a 4G smartphone that costs as little as £50. In comparison, the most expensive smartphone in the world is the Vertu Signature S, costing a whopping £24,000.
There is a world of difference in price, but is there much difference in what you actually get for your money?
Well, the Vertu is fitted with a super-durable sapphire display and holds a huge 64GB of internal memory. It comes complete with a 13 megapixel camera and claims to have over 300 hours of stand-by battery life.
At the opposite end of the price scale is the Rook which operates on the Android operating system. With only 8GB of memory and just a 5 megapixel camera, it is lagging being on the key specs.
It is the memory that is the biggest concern here, as CSS Insight Analyst Ben Wood says "I would be nervous about buying a device with less than 8GB memory – my experience is once you've installed a few apps you soon run out – you are getting very basic functionality".
In the current smartphone marketplace, Mr Wood believes "There are degrees of cheap. If you are not fussy about brand, an Android device is now very easily available indeed. You can get a decent camera, you can get good performance and a decent processor."
Purchasing the cheapest option may protect your wallet but you may lose out in the long run with a lack of internal storage for apps, photos and emails.
Cheaper devices can also be more difficult to update and could potentially come with security flaws when compared to the more expensive models.
Making the step up to the intermediate ground can be the most suitable option – paying anywhere between £150 to £250 for a smartphone can get you some excellent handsets.
Do some research and read some reviews before making your purchase, and you're sure to find a bargain that suits you.
