The range is called ‘Home Spot’, and this new collection includes Qi wireless technology which charges devices placed on – or near – the furniture. In fact, many of us who own smartphones already have this compatible technology built in to our phones.
Many consumers and interior designers thought they could only dream of the day when they could eliminate the tangle of cords that we are all forced to navigate daily.
“Through research and home visits, we know that people hate cable mess. They worry about not finding the charger and running out of power,” Ikea’s Jeanette Skjelmose, said in a statement.
“Our new innovative solutions, which integrate wireless charging into home furnishings, will make life at home simpler,” she added.
So it appears from now on that wireless technology will become an important feature in both furniture and industrial design. Once the world’s largest furniture manufacture is providing items for wireless charging to the general public, the game is on. Others will jump on the bandwagon fairly swiftly.
If your phone is equipped with Qi (Ikea’s system of choice), it will charge automatically. Many smartphones from Nokia, HTC, LG, and Samsung support this. One notable exception is Apple’s iPhone, so they will have to adapt to the technology soon and offer items themselves. After all, consumers who already have compatible phones today can now buy a cheap end table to support it.
If your phone is not equipped with Wireless Qi, then Ikea sells an adaptor accessory. Sadly, it’s the plain truth for most of us that as yet neither Ikea’s – nor anyone else’s – wireless charging furniture works as dependably as a bog standard old wall outlet!
