
After a detailed review of the communications marketplace, Ofcom has implemented these changes to over 175 million numbers. They also looked to clear up any disputes around the costs of numbers starting with 084, 087, 09 and 118.
Mobile users have always been advised that any calls to so called 'freephone' numbers like 0800 would be exempt from charges, but this has not been true.
Research showed that callers in the UK rack up a combined bill of £900 million every year, spending 250 million hours on the phone to these numbers.
Ofcom stated that many of these services did not make the cost of the call clear, and failed to provide consumers how much they would be charged for calling them.
Starting in July, any calls to service numbers will be made up of an access charge which will go to the provider, and a service charge set by the company or organisation being called.
The regulator's chief executive Sharon White said "UK Calling is the biggest change to telephone calls in over a decade. Together, we spend over £900 million a year calling service numbers, so it's important that people understand the cost before they pick up the phone".
