Huawei threatens Samsung on the global mobile share market

Huawei threatens Samsung on the global mobile share market

Market research company Gartner has revealed a sizable increase in the mobile market share of Chinese manufacturer Huawei during the third quarter of 2018, whilst Samsung declined.

In the third quarter of 2017, Huawei only made up 9.5% of the smartphone market share, yet new statistics reveal that this has increased to 13.4% over the same period this year.

Alternatively, flagship manufacturers Samsung and Apple faired less well, with Apple experiencing 0% growth in comparison with last year and Samsung experienced a fall of 3.4%.

What do these numbers indicate?

Whilst Samsung remains the top dog in terms of worldwide vendor smartphone sales with 18.9% of the market share, the sale of 73.4 million mobile phones is significantly lower than the 85.6 million sold during the third quarter of 2017.

Alternatively, Huawei has effectively leapfrogged Apple, increasing their mobile phone sales from 36.5 million in the third quarter of 2017 to 52.2 million this year.

Gartner, the independent market research company behind these statistics, has offered a number of reasons for Huawei’s success and the decline of Samsung’s mobile market share this year. Samsung’s latest high-end models, the S9, S9+ and Note 9, have largely failed to generate the expected number of sales or meet expected targets.

On the other hand, Huawei has decided to target emerging markets with mid-range and entry-level devices such as the Honor 9 model, offering decent specs for very competitive prices. These provide a capable challenge to Samsung’s lower end mobiles.

In terms of the future of the smartphone market, Gartner predicts that the growth in sale of smartphones will slow considerably in 2019 compared with 2018, and to expect the emergence of foldable mobiles and introduction of 5G capabilities as standard.
